Chinmoyee Biswas is a Bharatanatyam & a Contemporary dancer from Lucknow. She graduated from Goldsmiths University of London with a master’s degree in Arts Administration & Cultural Policy
She began her training in Bharatanatyam at the age of 9 and, after years of rigorous training, earned the Prabhakar degree in Bharatanatyam from Prayag Sangeet Samiti. Alongside her Bharatanatyam training, she developed a strong inclination towards Contemporary, Ballet, and Kathak, and subsequently pursued training under several renowned teachers. Chinmoyee, along with her elder sister Shachi, completed her Arangetram in 2015, marking the beginning of their professional careers.
Chinmoyee actively engages in freelance projects with international choreographers to expand her movement vocabulary. Notable collaborations include working with UK-based Bharatanatyam exponent Seeta Patel for the ‘Seeta Patel Choreographer Development Programme 2024’, with the renowned choreographer Mayuri Upadhya for the musical production, produced by Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre- Civilization to Nation 2025, and with Chinese theatre maker Tang Yue on a physical theatre experimental work titled The Burnt Butterfly for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024.
Chinmoyee served as the Dance President (2019–2020) of her undergraduate college, Isabella Thoburn College, where she brought laurels to the institution by winning accolades in both group and solo dance categories at inter-college competitions such as IIM Lucknow and IIT BHU. She was later selected as the Dance Instructor for the Goldsmiths Dance Club at Goldsmiths, University of London, during her master’s programme, where she trained students in Bollywood and Indian folk dance styles. Her workshops were attended by students from diverse nationalities, including those from China, Korea, and Pakistan. She also hosted & organised a Bollywood dance workshop at the Deptford Lounge, London, in 2024.
Chinmoyee is the Co-founder of Nirguna Dance Company, Lucknow, where she trains students both offline and online in Bharatanatyam foundational courses and Bollywood freestyle dance. Her online Bharatanatyam classes have attracted students from across India, including Pune, Kerala, Delhi, and Hyderabad, as well as international students from Switzerland and Germany.
With over 16 years of experience in the dance industry, Chinmoyee has travelled extensively and performed at major art and dance festivals across India, along with her elder sister Shachi. She continues to make an impact through dance and firmly believes that it is an artist’s responsibility to promote, preserve, and nurture ancient Indian classical dance forms while carrying them forward into contemporary contexts.
